George Johnson

November 25, 1933 — March 14, 2019

George Alonzo Johnson – 85, Rexburg, Idaho

George Alonzo Johnson, respected father, grandfather, and veteran, passed away on March 14, 2019 from complications from cancer and other illnesses.

Before moving to the Homestead in Idaho, George resided in Orem, Utah at the Seville Retirement Community.

George was born in Victor, Idaho to parents Eldon Alonzo Johnson and Velda Woolstenhulme as the 7th of 12 children. Growing up, George was involved in scouts, loved music and boxed for Victor High School where he later graduated.

George served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Western States area in 1953 and was ordained a Seventy on November 14, 1965. George loved studying the gospel and serving his Heavenly Father in any capacity.

After completing his mission and returning to Victor, George married Eloise Lowery on September 14, 1956, in the Salt Lake City, Utah temple. George was drafted into the United States Army five days after his marriage and later discharged in 1958.

Together, George and Eloise had six children and lived in Idaho, Oklahoma and Missouri. They later divorced in 1978.

George married Gay Johnson on April 11, 1987 in the Idaho Falls temple. They were married for 23 years before Gay returned to her Heavenly Father.

George’s strong work ethic and talent for learning new skills led him to attend welding school, electronic school for the Army and air condition repair school. He was a gifted carpenter and landscaper. George loved the outdoors and serving his community as a scout leader. He had a boisterous singing voice that he gladly shared whenever he could. One of his favorite activities was attending Mountain Man Rendezvous with his late wife Gay.

In their later years, George and Gay served a LDS temple mission in Saint George, UT and later a full-time mission in Texas. His continued example of faith service and dedication to the gospel has blessed and will continue to bless generations of his family.

George was preceded in death by his beautiful eternal companion, Gay Johnson; and his beloved daughter Monica Johnson; his parents; his siblings Rhea LaCon Christensen; Cleo Bonnie Johnsen; Venice Nadine Walker; Burton Eldon Johnson; and Lynn W. Johnson.

George is survived by his children Morgan Teresa (Rex) Beach; Mechele (Don) Marotz; George Mitchell (Kristy) Johnson; Macon (Russell) Williams; and Marshall Burton (Abigail) Johnson; his 18 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; his siblings Bettie Arlene Hansen; Luella Velda Booth; Terry Johnson; Dee Lamont Johnson; Eugene LaRoy Johnson; and Kathleen Joy Kaufman.
