Lydia Smith

October 8, 1921 — July 27, 2014

Lydia Ruth Smith, age 92, of Teton Valley, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2014 at the “Gables of Ammon Assisted Living Center” in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She was born October 8, 1921, at Victor, Idaho, the daughter of Pleasant Monroe Sherman and Areatha Minerva Cheney Sherman. She attended school in Victor, Idaho and graduated from Teton High School. On October 2, 1940 she married Reed Woodrow Smith in the Salt Lake temple. He preceded her in death on April 15, 2008. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving faithfully in many ward and stake positions. She was a talented musician, playing the violin or singing in duets for many funerals and church functions. He life was a life of love and kindness to family, neighbors, students and anyone she came in contact with. For many years while raising a family and working all day she drove to Rexburg, Idaho and attended Ricks College evening classes to obtain a college degree. She then attended summer schools at Utah State University, Logan, Utah until she completed a bachelors Degree in Education. Following graduation, she accepted a teaching position with Teton Valley School District and taught “Remedial Reading” for many years to Teton Valley students. She was an avid gardener, and maintained a beautiful yard with many varieties of flowers and shrubs. She grew and sold raspberries to may Teton Valley residents. She was still weeding, pruning and picking raspberries at age 91 years of age. She was an excellent cook and mother to her children and grandchildren. Her greatest joy came in loving and serving her family. She is survived by her children, Errol Smith, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Dennis Smith, Rigby, Idaho; Kendall (Kim) Smith, Tetonia, Idaho; Don (Jeanie) Smith, Sonora, California; Alan (Denise) Smith, Driggs, Idaho; Brad (Tami) Smith, Idaho Falls, Idaho; 24 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Reed Smith; 3 sisters: Golda Robertson, Winnie Marcum and Doris Simmons; 2 daughters-in-law: Patricia Smith and Linda Smith and 1 grandson Cole Smith. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, August 2, 2014 at the Driggs L.D.S. Stake Center. A visitation will be held on Friday from 7-8:30 at the Valley Mortuary, 786 Valley Centre Dr., Driggs and then for an hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will be in the Driggs Cemetery.
