In Loving Memory of William J HastingsFebruary 25, 1942 – September 22, 2025
William J Hastings, 83, of Victor, Idaho, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2025. A devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, cherished brother, and faithful friend, Bill lived a life defined by service, creativity, and deep connection to family and community.
Born on February 25, 1942, in Rexburg, Idaho to Miles and Jessie Hastings, Bill was raised in the small, tight-knit community of Teton Valley. There, he developed a lifelong love for the land and a strong work ethic while farming alongside his father. Bill attended Teton Valley High School, where he was known for his athletic ability, and later pursued higher education at Idaho State University and Ricks College.
On March 3, 1961, Bill married the love of his life, Cheryl Murdock, in Chapin, Idaho. Their marriage became the foundation of a beautiful life together, raising a family and building a legacy rooted in love, faith, and perseverance. Over the years, Bill and Cheryl lived in various places, but their hearts remained in Victor, Idaho, where they eventually settled to raise their children.
Bill’s professional journey was as varied and inspired as his interests. He found success as an architectural drafter and designer in Des Moines, Iowa, where he brought his creative vision and meticulous attention to detail to life through his work. Ultimately, the pull of home and family led Bill and Cheryl back to Teton Valley, where they returned to farming with his father. Later, they became the managers and operators of Pierre’s Rendezvous, a local restaurant and bowling alley—a vibrant gathering place where friends, neighbors, and families came together to share meals, laughter, and memories.
An avid outdoorsman, Bill embraced every season with enthusiasm. In winter, he could be found skiing with family at Grand Targhee, serving with the ski patrol, or racing snowmobiles with friends. Summers were spent boating, fishing, and—perhaps his greatest pastime—golfing. His passion for golf culminated in one of his most extraordinary achievements: a vision for what would become Teton Springs Resort and the Bronze Buffalo Ranch, a world-class golf resort created right in his backyard, a lasting tribute to his dedication and perseverance.
More than anything, Bill treasured time with his family. One of the most beloved traditions he and Cheryl established was an annual family gathering—a highlight for generations. Filled with camping, boating, golfing, yard games, and laughter, these reunions created cherished memories and a sense of unity that will endure for years to come.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife, Cheryl of 64 years; his children, Terri Shirley (Gil Shirley) Rexburg, Idaho, Layne Hastings (Janice Hastings) St. George, UT, (Julie Hastings) Park City, UT; 9 Grandchildren; 19 Great-Grandchildren; and his sister Madge Boyle. He is preceded in death by his parents, Miles and Jessie Hastings; sons, Larry J Hastings and Eric Miles Hastings; and brother-in-law, Don Boyle.
A funeral service honoring Bill’s life will be held on Saturday, September 27, at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 87 E Center St, Victor, ID 83455. Visitation will also take place at the Victor church on Friday, September 26, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and again on Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Bill will be laid to rest among family at the Victor Cemetery.
Bill’s life was a testament to hard work, love, laughter, and legacy. His kindness, strength, and generosity will be deeply missed—and lovingly remembered—by all who had the honor to know him.
